Each year, the world's leading pediatric hematologists/oncologists gather for the Congress of the International Society of Paediatric Oncology (SIOP). The 47th Congress took place from October 5-11, 2015 in Capetown, South Africa.

SIOP shares Aslan's vision that "no child should die of cancer", and seeks to achieve this vision by both "increasing knowledge about all aspects of childhood cancer" and "providing training opportunities for all childhood cancer care providers worldwide." Toward these dual ends, we partnered with SIOP to provide scholarships for pediatric oncology nurses and nurse educators from low-middle-income countries with demonstrated impact in their home institutions or globally to attend the Congress in Capetown and present about their work.

For the 47th Congress, our pediatric oncology nursing scholarships funded extraordinary clinicians and educators from three different continents:

  • Sumaira Punjwani, Manager of Nursing Education, Afzaal Memorial Thalessemia Foundation, Karachi, Pakistan
  • Raneth Sinketh, Nurse, Angkor Hospital for Children, Cambodia
  • Arifa Khatoon, Manager, Infection Control, Children's Cancer Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan
  • Rehana Punjwani, Manager, Education Department, Children's Cancer Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan
  • Shazia Bana, Head of Nursing Services, Children's Cancer Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan
  • Barnabas Raymond Manlokiya, Nurse, Kornfa Anonkye Teaching Hospital, Kumasi, Ghana

Ms. Khatoon and Ms. Punjawi already are strong partners with Aslan, conducting the pediatric nursing oncology trainings for the clinical nursing team at JUSH under the supervision of Aslan Medical Advisory Board member, Julia Challinor.
